The Global City And The Global Slum

Most slums are not global, just like most cities are not global. But some slums are positioning themselves as actors on global stages, often with distinct political tactics and a sort ofprise de conscience — a growing awareness that they are objects of interest to the media, politicians and a growing range of economic sectors. It takes a mix of conditions for this to happen. One generalization I would make after years of research is that a slum that is next to a global city tends to emerge as such a “global” slum.
